The Story:
Did you know that marine turtles lived alongside dinosaurs over 100 million years ago? Our vase features Hawksbill sea turtles, one of 7 current day species related to those ancient creatures. Hawksbills are named for their pointed beaks and are found mainly in tropical oceans, feeding on sponges, sea anemones and jellyfish in coral reefs.
Often traveling vast distances, females always return to the beach where they were hatched to lay eggs. It is estimated that only 1 in 1000 hatchlings make it to adulthood.
On the endangered species list, these gentle creatures are threatened by entangling fishing gear, marine pollution, and the slowly disappearing coral reefs caused by climate change. Hawksbills face an additional peril of being hunted for their beautiful and distinctive “tortoiseshell.”
