The word bandana comes from the Hindi word "bandhnu," which means “to tie,” referring to intricately patterned kerchiefs created by tie-dyeing. Imported in the 18th century as handkerchiefs for snuff-taking aristocrats in Europe, it has evolved over time into an inexpensive and practical accessory.
Interestingly, the first bandana produced in America was an act of protest by Martha Washington. Defying a British ban on textile printing during the Revolutionary war, she commissioned a printmaker in Philadelphia to create a square kerchief featuring a red and black print of General Washington on horseback.
